They came from another world, a world of hurt and pain,

Looking for a special place where they won't see that again.

Transported to a shelter where their medical needs were met,

Yet they traveled onward they hadn't found home yet.

Now gentle hands caress them, gentle voices call a name,

No one raises a hand to strike, things are not the same.

Slowly they come out of the dark and begin to run and play,

Tentatively they give their trust and come into a brighter day.

Their tails are wagging now and they are not alone,

With help from friends that care they find their forever home.

Nice!

My Gracie, boxer/pit bull mix was a shelter dog. I don't think she was abused, per se, but was definitely afraid of the broom. When she first moved in, any time I picked up the broom to sweep, she cowered in a corner. Every now and them she will scoot away from me when I am sweeping, but after 4 years, she knows I would never hurt her. She is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever had, and I am so grateful for the day I found her. We had actually went to the shelter to look for a cat, after our Rhodisian Ridgeback died after eating a can of Mighty Dog, back when all that awful stuff with dog food was going around. The shelter didn't have any cats, so we looked at the dogs. My husband was leaning toward a big dog, so I talked him into Gracie instead. With him on the road, I didn't want a big male dog, thinking he was my boss!! (our ridgeback always though he was the Alpha male in our house) Gracie is so sweet tempered, didn't bark once in the first 4 months we had her. In fact, we wondered if she could bark. Then one day, so big wolf hounds walked by on the front sidewalk and she barked at them. She still doesn't bark very much, except when someone is around in the yard that she thinks shouldn't be there.

love it dave!

we have 3 dogs and a cat.. 2 of the dogs we have are strays, one we got from a shelter.. the shelter dog is amazing!! so well mannered even tho he is still acting like a puppy at 2 1/2. Our first dog was a stray and didn't like brooms, any males, It sometimes would not reconize DH if he had a beard or if he was wearing his hat. It took him 4 years before he would come up to my mother. It takes him a long time to get near a person and hates crowds and he's a beagle! We call him our broken beagle b/c he doesn't act like a typical one in any way. Other than the howling. lol
